Today’s moms have a lot on their plate. They have to juggle home responsibilities, raise children, and making a living. That’s why the most flexible jobs for moms allow you to meet all, or most, of your responsibilities. You want to be able to earn extra money and have time to do school pickups and eat dinner with your family. I had this problem too. I am an attorney and the standard work day can be long and stressful. Before I had children, I made the decision to find a more flexible career path. I ended up working at a big corporation that valued family life and offered work from home options (check out #32 below for my role!).

I have been working for that employer for over 7 years and I’m happy to say after having 2 kids, it was the best decision I ever made. I get to be present for school drop offs and pick ups, have dinner with my family, enjoy free weekends together, and still earn a good income.

What kind of jobs are good for moms?

Being a mom is one of the hardest and most time-consuming jobs there is. If you really want to strike some sort of balance between home and work life, the best jobs for moms are those that offer flexibility in your schedule or allow you to work from home. These kinds of jobs allow you to spend maximum time with your children when they’re not in school.

Thankfully, due to the pandemic, there are more remote work opportunities than ever before.

Some key things to look for in your search of mom-friendly jobs:

• a work from home job option (at least 2-3 days per week);
• the ability to make your own schedule;
• flexible hours that allow you to do school drop offs and pick ups;
• a generous benefits package that includes paid family leave, vacation and sick time, and health benefits;
• childcare support such as childcare reimbursement, dependent care flexible spending accounts, or on-site childcare;
• low stress responsibilities (at least not high stress);
• job security;
• reasonable compensation; and
• a company culture that supports parents.

While realistically not every job will have all of these characteristics, pay close attention to the ones that are most important to you during your job search.

Why should moms look for flexible jobs?

As moms, we take on a lot of demanding roles at home in caring for our families. If you have a flexible schedule at work, you can continue to grow your career and meet the needs of your family as well.

Our schedules can also be unpredictable and subject to our children’s schedules and health. For example, schools typically follow an 8:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. schedule, while the average work day is 9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. There are also doctor appointments and sick days (or early pickups due to sickness) to account for.

In my own experience, I’ve learned that you can have both a fulfilling, challenging career without compromising what’s important to you. For me, my family comes first, and I look for jobs and employers that will support, not hinder, that value.

When I realized that the path I was going down as an attorney was not going to be sustainable for the family I wanted to have, I looked to transition my career to a well-paying job that would allow me to be present for my family.

You can do the same! It will just take a little bit of creativity and planning in your job search to find the right job that will suit your needs, situation, and experience.

• There’s also a lot of exciting opportunities to learn about new technologies, market trends, and customer needs, which can provide ongoing personal and professional growth.
• Product managers are usually paid well, with the average salary being over $100,000.
• And finally, there are plenty of product manager roles that are fully remote (mine is) or hybrid.
